I believe these are the EFS300
That's correct.
EFS300 with 0.3s preheat. Won't be tube killers any more than a fast glow starter, SRS or quick start! Great starters, but not recommended for frequent switching.
I have gold/brown coloured ones.
Translucent brown with gold text is an old version of the (now green) EFS600. Is it branded RS?
No, "ARLEN PLC" EFS 600 Made in England
I fitted one of these in a mate's kitchen light around 5 years ago. The tube (58w) still looks like new despite it being switched several times per night. The only annoyance really is the noise it creates.
With the slow starters you'll put it on as you walk into the kitchen, it'll be pitch black at night and the ends'll light the room up like a torch before it pings on.
I wonder if these somehow force higher voltage/current through the cathodes during preheating like Vivatronics seem to. I guess that'd explain the noise. In any case, I need to buy some of these, they sound interesting!
Tried one in my old Fitz 20W. Thing roared!
Just tried a pair of these in a twin 4ft 40w t12 fitting and it does start the tubes near enough instantly but as mentioned the noise from the ballasts sounds horrible
I tried some in my Fitzgerald twin 58w and the ballasts were loud on startup.
These must pull more current through the ballast then during preheating to give a more thorough preheat in less time (hence the frequently switched 58w tubes mentioned above still looking clean). I've heard it said the preheating phase is rectified so is DC, hence the noise. I haven't looked up the circuitry myself though so not 100% sure.
Another starter that does this is those Safety starters. They make the ballast louder when starting although they are just normal glow bottle starters?
Read somewhere on here that pulsestarters don't work well with 8ft fittings. Try wacking one of these things in the fitting.
old efs600's didn't work with 100w lamps, newer ones (as in probably the last 20 years or so) are fine
My Brown/Gold ones work with tubes 30 - 125w
I’ve read the specs for the pulse starters and all I have read state not suitable for 8ft 85w or 8ft 100w tubes. Never tried any with either tubes like.
indeed these pull half wave rectified mains through the choke during the preheat which causes the choke to saturate and allow a lot higher current flow then it would normally therefore preheating the cathodes much quicker, but that also means the cathodes get preheated a lot harder then normally so I would not use EFS300s with any rare tubes or tubes with delicate cathodes
Iv'e had them actually break tube cathodes before
