Westinghouse H34 /W 1000W mercury lamp
|
this was a very unusual and very rare find!
found on UK ebay this is not something I imported from the US!
its a very unusual lamp, because not only is it H34 which is a very rare specification of US 1000W mercury lamp, and not only because it has /W strontium zinc orthophosphate phosphor
but it has an E40 cap! not an E39 cap, clearly indicating it must have been made for export for some reason!
its very weird seeing such a european looking cap on such a US lamp otherwise!
it is worth noting that H34 is of the same specifications that 240V single phase British 1Kw mercury lamps are, so its not too surprising that it is H34, but in the US H34 is very rare!
(most 1Kw lamps there are H36 which is equivalent to our 400V 3 Phase 1Kw mercury lamp)
im also very happy to get it because its my first /W Mercury lamp, its the last major mercury lamp phosphor type I was lacking in the collection, it is a very interesting colour!
its also interesting to note that Andy has a very similar lamp to this one in his collection but his is about 10 years older and made in Canada
but it is also H34 E40 capped with /W phosphors so I do wonder if these 2 lamps are related in anyway, ie where they imported by the same persons/company or wherever they originated from!

ah nice Thorncollector, do you have a picture of your H34 lamp uploaded or not? it would be interesting to see it
sadly not FSB, the seller had 5 listed (I suspect there was at one point a case of 6 and maybe the 1st one was put into use all those years ago as these large lamps where sold in cases of 6) I think I was the first to spot the listing but they all sold pretty quickly sadly, I managed to get one, then I shared the link with a fellow collector and he got one, but then suddenly the remaining 3 got bought in one go by one unknown person and I think got distributed among a couple other collectors? (I know colin got one), im just happy I managed to get one given how the 3 suddenly sold!
as H34 is just rare and uncommon. I just now have a way of lighting them now. even the gear for the lamp is very rare. only application for these was using these where 3 phase 240 volt delta system in the US. other than that rest got the H36 gear and lamps
