It's surprising how much MBFU lamps can dim and still maintain an arc.

I wonder how long ago these last saw a lamp change? I replaced some mercury floodlights lighting the exterior of a church about 3 yrs ago. They were installed to mark the year 2000 and when I replaced them, a few still had their original lamps. Dim, but still lit after 20 yrs!

This is the problem with mercury lamps. They last so long, they become useless well before they get replaced but because they are still lit they are considered to be working! It's a shame as these will eventually be ripped out when all they need is relamping.

Agreed and it adds to the problem then of people saying 'Oh we'll upgrade to LED, it's brighter' Well, yes, a lot of things are brighter than a very greened out merc lamp.
