GE 2' 20W Kolorite with bodge Brand new tube arrived with open circuit cathode. Must have been jolted. This bodge gets it working. Without the link, after cold starting it was still struggling with the writhing snake and mild flicker and getting blackened after a few hours. Poor thing.

I've got a Hungary GE 20W/54 with same issue! Sadly gone that black bow it won't stay lit

I suspect mine would go the same way if I used it. Sad Most of the cathode must have broken off yours to rob it of electron emission.

Looking at the cathode shining my iPhone camera through shows its come off one leg sadly.

I'm surprised it went black and stopped working if it still had the full cathode attached and both pins were connected. 2-footers should be able to cold start at one end and sustain emission until emitter depletion, surely?

that's what I imagined. I might get it dug out and have a play with it tomorrow

I've had this in my landing light for a month now. It starts and runs perfectly every evening. You would never know it was compromised, and the light it gives is simply gorgeous. It brings everything to life.

To test this on a newly acquired Quickstart ballast I removed the shorting link. Low and behold the cathode has made contact, >4 Ohms cold resistance. I carefully inserted it into my landing light just modified for Quickstart (with PFC correction), and both ends now glow as nature intended. Result!

It was probably rectifying.

No rectification has taken place at any time. I would know. My eyes are well trained. It is working normally.

If I was you i'd give that electrode a few belts from a decent sized elecrtolytic capacitor, to make sure that fillament is fully welded on

I've had a GB GE 100W 840 in my barn with the cathode linked for 3 years now!!

Kev I'm amazed an 8-footer starts with shorted cathode! eclipsilamps, it's benefiting from gravity and working normally. I'll probably leave it for a few years until EOL.
