Fluorescent Christmas
This pic is actually taken last year, but I plan on doing the same again this year (late in getting it up, shulda been done by last thursday...)

The colours are actually fake (transparent plastic over standard lamps...wouldn't risk 'real' coloured lamps out there LOL)

Overall I think it turned out ok...except for the fact of being too bright & overpowering the the real xmas lights during the periods when its on.
(that's actually one reason its not up yet: I wanted to change the HF-instant start ballasts for HF rapid start (the other reason being its been freezing cold & dark by the time I get home)

That looks awsome!!!! Cool over here unless you had a load of weather packs normal fittings under the soffit would rust in weeks!

Looks good jay!!! I always thought you were one of those people that wood have your house, garden and roof covered in decorations LOL

Love the colour combination Jay! Cool
AngryHorse   [03 Dec, 2015 at 10:04 PM]
Yeah, I remember seeing this, green and reds are the same 2 colours Morrisons use here.

@Kev:
Are you saying metal would rust there just from being outside? due to humidity?

These aren't even real fittings, they are just a board with lampholders attached LOL (if I remember I'll take a pic of one before it gets put up this weekend)
Obviously that would be a big no-no in a rainy/wet climate! but here is such a dry climate, and being under the soffit there's basically no chance of it getting wet..yeah I guess if the wind was blowing straight on a very small amount of snow might hit the lamps, and just fall off LOL.
Even in summer it'd *probably* be ok, but I wouldn't risk running it in a rainstorm since there's a slight chance rain could hit it if we got one of those heavy thunderstorms with strong winds (not an issue since is taken down in January)

If I had enough of them I could just put normal fittings out (and they'd never rust...assuming ofcourse they were at the back of the soffit right against the house where rain could never get them..the wood things I put at the front edge since they are shorter & thus don't stick down as far as a fitting would)

@Danny:
I used to cover the whole roof with a grid of mini light strings, now I just outline the house, but I do use multiple colours, each on its own 'channel'(computer controlled)
It wouldn't show in a pic unless I did a closeup, but this year there is 5 sets of lights(5 colours) around each window Smile
I also used to put lights in the trees too, but don't anymor for 3 reasons:
1. The dumb trees keep growing LOL!
2. I'm old now, and simply can't do it anymore.
3. The darned squirrels (all of which I'd love to shoot) will chew the cords & eat bulbs Sad

@RobTDCI / AngryHorse:
Yep. these are what I consider the true Christmas colours!
For some reason most stores that sell normal xmas lights here have White, Red, Blue, Purple/Pink... but no green (especially with LEDs)! I've never figured out why.
(luckily there are some that have green).

Yes most certainly our weather is so shit that even having the fittings outside would rust them. Mine even inside my large barn are going rusty really bad now which is annoying!
XmasLightGuy   [05 Dec, 2015 at 06:43 AM]
I'm really shocked that they would rust _inside_ your barn! Shocked

I actually have one fitting (a troffer I got free) that's been sitting outside for just over a year now...surprisingly I don't think it has anything more than a bit of minor surface rust at the edge, even though its got rained/snowed on (it is somewhat protected (its under an overhang so rain/snow falling straight down won't hit it - but we usually get wind). I really should go look it over, plus try & find a spot inside for it LOL)

I got part of this up and did some testing with dimming today. Seems to be working (but with some issues...the right-most pair just won't dim as much as the others. not sure if its because 1 lamp is a 3-footer or something with the ballast, then it seems the next 2 pairs each get a bit dimmer(not enough to bother me or really even be noticeable to the 'average person')..but will be interesting to see once I get the 4th & 5th up though )
Kev   [05 Dec, 2015 at 08:58 AM]
What ballasts are you using on them are they all the same brand?

@Kev:
Yep all are the same brand & model#. I just uploaded a pic of it here I simply swapped out that one which didn't dim as much as the others today & the replacement deff dimms better Smile .

now I just need to edit my light-control-file so the computer will turn that part of the display on/off Smile
