Thats a first, never saw one of these before! Thorn had a sizeable market in Canada and for a while we made the so-called Canadian SON in Leicester but really not well. I guess at a certain point they decided to source in from SYL until GE took over Thorn's lamp operations.

Why were the thorns not made well James?

Hmmm, i wonder due to lack of propper machenery there to make them? I thought they made them for thorn in North American market due to that. One thing i did learn Thorn did made presents in US but never took off.
I also have American market beta 2 with a modified casting to take larger pipe entry. It made me wonder What product line did thorn Have for US market. I even wondered if there such thing as Pop pack here, I do have a advance ballast for thorn 2D but it can also power up 30/40 watt fluorescent tube.

The 1000w CSI PAR64 seemed to have been very popular in the US at one point, in bulding illumination and also sports stadia.

Oh yes! I managed to run mine with a 1000w & 400w SON chokes in parralell to get get the required arc current of 15 amps!

I have a 1980s Thorn USA catalogue, and SOX, CSI and special outdoor floodlights seem to be the main offerings. Many of the fittings are quite different than the UK Thorn range, and typical American style.
