I use them for putting power on indicators on electronic devices that don't have them. I've always liked these kind of LEDs, just not so keen on those used for general lighting.

Yep I agree. Nothing at all wrong with LEDs, just the absolute shit people put them in and run them with, gives them a bad name.

The domed ones are not the best for lumen drop off though, they do it faster than SMTs

Yes they do. I wonder if its something to do with the fact they are not heatsinked at all, as smd ones still transfer their heat to the board itself even though it may only be a small amount. Underpowering them is of course a solution for these through hole ones.
