60s/70s Fluorescent train lighting
This was taken on the Llangollen heritage railway and is a steam hauled service in this case. Here we have a row of T12 4ft 40w tubes that started to appear in the late 60s on-wards and were retrofitted to many older trains during the 70s, replacing 60w 24v Tungsten filament lamps to improve light levels and also give a more modern appearance. The light level is much better than from the tungsten lights in the other carriages. There is also a small spot light to give extra light to the table though this didn't work. There is a battery pack under the carriage which is recharged by some kind of dynamo or alternator as the train moves. They are seen here running in a tunnel and are only fired up for the tunnel. These are single tube but there was also a twin tube version. These are lovely carriages, loads of room with deep comfy seats all aligned to a window unlike modern trains that all seem to be about getting as many people as possible into a space. Notice all the steam on the windows from the engine!

A lovely sight! Wonder if they can still get 4' T12s for these?

I wondered the same thing on the Swanage steam railway last summer. Given the serious socks on over 50% of the tubes, my guess would be they're having problems getting them.

Yes, would be interesting to know. I hope someone doesn't decide to convert them to LED strips! Sad

Would be worth them getting armour lamps in bulk if just to keep them going!

They tend to be pretty keen on keeping things as original S possible from what I have seen which is encouraging!

Have to talk to me then, I've got about 300 T12 40w Philips made Osrams

Nice set up that.

I've got to give to the people who keep these old lines going, they do a fantastic job! The loco that pulled our train today had only been brought back into running order in 2010 having not run since 1965. Then there's all the stations, track and signalling, all maintained by volunteers and to a high standard. The train was full of people who seemed to be enjoying it and it was a real cross section of people of all ages, not your stereo typical anoraks.

These looked to be warm white tubes, it's just my camera making it look cold.

In the 2000s some train operators changed over to T8 for these, they had little plastic spacers made to fit into the terry clips that support the tubes. They were a bit of a failure as the T8s couldn't take the vibrations.

I'll get you some photos of the control gear for these soon.

They stick rock T12's on the 150 and 156 DMU's Smile
