Nixie tube clock
|
Here is my Nixie tube clock, this was built using a pre made PCB and is based on a circuit that uses 4017 decade counters to divide the mains 50hz down. Nixie tubes are a 1950s technology also known as 'numicators' and were commonly used in desktop calculators and other lab test equipment. Then in the 1970s they were phased out when LED and vacuum fluorescent display appeared, in part because these require 180v to drive them. Yep, LED has an early history as the grim reaper of other technologies.
