Thorn Voyager Twin 8w Bulkhead Gear Tray (Refurbished)
Here you see a freshly refurbished gear tray for a Thorn Voyager 2x 8w bulkhead fixture. Not sure of the age of this, the filled chokes make me think 1970's?

Stupidly I didn't take any pictures of this before dismantling & cleaning. It was covered in dirt and had obviously done some hours. All four lamp holders had gone crispy and were broken in some way, the top layer of paint had turned to dust & just washed off the gear tray, the starter sockets had leaked PVC plasticiser, and the pressure from the Terry clips had crushed the original starters which had gone brittle!

The chokes are noisy little things, but do work fine. The left hand choke you may notice I had to solder the cables to, this was my fault, I used a small screwdriver to release the cables and it bent the pins so they no longer gripped the cable :-(

I still need two lamp holders to replace the crispy golden yellow ones at the top in this picture, but they work for now.

Nice neat and tidy restoration!

Very nice! You just need a nice pair of thorn 155/200 glow starters to finish this off nicely!

Many thanks. Would be nice for originality, but not keen on glow starters to be honest

Why? Theyre better i much prefer them over pulse starters to be honest lol

Nice neat wiring job as well!

Thanks Rob... Barring the occasional instant strikes from mains open circuit voltage, pulse starters provide a properly preheated start first time every time. What's not to like?

I dont like them since one blew up in my hand and another popped a rare thorn tube of mine Sad i think andy had one pop a thorn pink? But theyre my only reasons for disliking them . I used to like them beforehand lol

Oh and on this gear tray i see an option to convert to 3x8w Smile

I've got several Arlen Pulse Starters and LEL Multipulse's in use and no issues so far. I can't think how a starter would cause a tube to fail? I'd think the tube was about to fail anyway perhaps? -oh and don't hold starters or anything live in your hand lol Smile

I was looking at a 3x8 Voyager just the other day & it's control gear... It used two chokes, a single 8w, and a 13w choke to drive the other two tubes in series, I didn't know a 13w choke was suitable for that use

Some have blown the cathodes right out. Yeah its not long ago i found out you could use a 13w choke for 2x8w as id always just used a single 8w with no problems... but it makes sense really
